Overview
Cavities, one of the most common dental problems, are created when bacteria erode your dental enamel. In the past, dental cavities were filled with a material called amalgam, which is a mixture of different metals such as silver or mercury. Now we know that amalgam fillings do not bond well with the teeth and the mercury is dangerous to your health. At Dental Health in Brattleboro, VT, our board-certified Dental Health team offers tooth-colored fillings to children and adults made from a composite resin to fill and protect cavities. Our Dental Health team can also remove old metal fillings and replace them with tooth-colored fillings for a safer and better-looking treatment of cavities.
Best Candidates
Tooth-colored fillings may be ideal for patients of all ages and often fill in the decay in the enamel after it has been cleaned by the Dental Health team. Composite resin is a versatile material that can be used to treat other problems with the teeth, including cracks or enamel that have been worn down by teeth grinding (bruxism). Since the composite resin is colored to match your natural teeth, tooth-colored fillings can be used on both the front and back teeth for a seamless appearance. If you have metal fillings, talk to our team about having them removed and replaced with tooth-colored fillings.
What To Expect
Getting a filling at Dental Health is typically an easy process. The area surrounding the cavity will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize your discomfort. Other forms of sedation can be discussed if you have any fears or dental anxieties to help keep you relaxed during the procedure. Once you are prepared, the decayed enamel is removed with a unique dental drill that our Dental Health team will select based on where the cavity is located in the tooth and the level of decay. After the enamel is removed and the tooth is cleaned, the space will be filled with the composite material and set with a special light. Finally, we will polish the filling so it feels comfortable and matches your natural teeth.
Dental Health Reviews
Excellent dentist. Compassionate and caring. Everything explained well and she's highly skilled.
It's always a good experience. They explain as they go along. The hygienists are always personable and do a great job. Dr. Ellison has been a great provider. Super happy with the team
Best dental office ever! I used to have dental anxiety but no more. They are very gentle.
Amazing staff and dentist. Very clean, and professional but also very welcoming.
Dr Ellison's office is the happiest and friendlyest dental practice I've ever had in my 81 years. I've had all sorts of dental work done at her practice, implants, crowns, extractions and general exams and cleaning. The med techs that assist in all procedures are well educated and trained well. At 81, I wasn't sure about having another implant so I asked Dr Ellison and we had a 20 minute chat to help me with my decision. She went over X-rays and we discussed pros and cons and with her help decided to have an extraction instead of a transplant since it was a tooth in the background and would not be seen when smiling and would not interfere with chewing. At 81 I thought this was a smart choice. Dr Ellison is so pleasant, friendly and professional all at the same time. Same with her entire staff right up to the front desk who are also very helpful in answering questions. I can recommend this dental office wholeheartedly without hesitation.

Recovery
You should be able to resume your normal day after your filling is done, but you might have some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days. You may take over-the-counter pain relief medication to address any discomfort, but you should not have any major issues. If after a few days the filling feels too high or uneven, please contact our office. Your tooth-colored filling can be kept clean by following a normal home oral care routine with daily brushing and flossing. During your annual dental exam, the Dental Health team will assess your filling and decide if it needs to be repaired or replaced at any point.
