Overview

Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are administered during an annual exam to allow a better view of your teeth and gums. They allow our Dental Health team to diagnose problems that are not otherwise easy to see and to learn about the health of the inside of your teeth, jawbone, and gums. There are numerous dental and oral problems affecting children and adults that can be determined from digital x-rays such as tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, bone loss, and impactions. When these problems are found early, they can be treated more efficiently with more treatment options. During annual dental exams at Dental Health in Brattleboro, VT, digital x-rays will help our team more accurately diagnose and treat oral health issues for you and your family members.

Best Candidates

In general, digital x-rays are a part of a routine dental exam for kids and adults. They can be administered as a preventive measure or if you or your loved ones are experiencing dental issues of any kind. Though digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional x-rays, our team prefers to minimize the amount of exposure that is delivered to every patient. While they are typically safe for most patients, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should tell our staff at the beginning of the exam so that extra precautions can be taken.

What to Expect

Typically done at the beginning of a dental cleaning or exam, digital x-rays take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Most patients will have a series of x-rays taken to include all areas of the mouth. After they are taken, the x-rays are uploaded and can be viewed by you and the Dental Health team during your appointment. Our team will be able to assess if there are any abnormalities and discuss what treatments may be needed.

Follow-Up

A series of digital x-rays will typically be taken once a year at your annual dental exam. During some visits, a whole mouth series may be taken to get a comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your digital x-rays will be kept with your file at our facility so we can watch for changes over time and chart any areas of concern.

Insurance Coverage

Typically, a dental insurance plan will cover the cost of digital x-rays as part of a routine dental exam. Our office will contact your insurance provider to determine any costs. For any out-of-pocket expenses or if you and your family don't have dental insurance, Dental Health accepts many payment methods and we can help you find medical financing.
